Product managers, engineers, laboratory staff: We gather all our optics specialists together to design our sunglasses.
The humble sunglasses strap has come a long way over the years and now there are lots of options when it comes to how they attach, the length and head size. There are even sunglasses straps specifically designed for certain sports.
There are two types of straps: slip on straps and hook straps.
Slip On Straps
These are for sunglasses with arms that aren’t pierced, and you basically slip them on to your sunglasses like a sock.
If the arms of your sunglasses are pierced, choose hook straps which thread through them.
Long straps fit around your neck. They’re commonly used in sports such as hiking, where you’re outside for several hours and have lots of opportunity to take them off and put them back on again – a strap will ensure you don’t lose them and that they’re easily to hand when the sun breaks through the clouds.
Short straps are used to ensure your sunglasses fit snugly on the face. Fans of fast or high-action sports will really appreciate the security this kind of strap offers.
Most sunglasses straps are adjustable so that they’ll fit on any face shape. There are several systems available to adjust the length of a strap:
1/ The buckle . It slides along the strap to allow length adjustment.
2/ The hook and loop attachment . It will shrink or expand to the size of the head in a single step, making it ideal for on the move adjustments. However, the hook and loop system is less pleasant for the hair.
3/ Other straps are available in a variety of sizes.
Polyester is the most common choice for sunglasses straps because of its versatility and durability.
If you do water sports, such as surfing, kitesurfing, or sailing, neoprene straps will be best suited to the marine environment. Neoprene is used for many products in contact with water such as wetsuits. It provides the following benefits:
- It’s stretchy
- It perfectly adheres to the shape of the head
- It is water resistant
- It is quick drying
- It provides buoyancy , helping you find you sunglasses more easily if you drop them in the water
Eyewear straps are for all ages and all styles. There are discreet elastic straps or, if you want to make a statement, some brightly coloured and patterned ones.
