When do I start training?

If I have been trail running for less than 2 years.

You need to train for at least 14 weeks if you want to finish your first Ultra Marathon

If I have been trail running for more than 2 years

You need to train for at least 11 weeks.

Training Sessions Type

If it's 14 weeks or 11 weeks, you should split your training into blocks, ideally 3 blocks of 3/4 weeks. 

A recovery week after each block is imperative!

3*3 +2 = 11 weeks

3*4 +2 = 14 weeks

My First block:

Run often & run slow

The goal here is to get your body used to run with a bit of fatigue.

My Second block:

Run very often, with incline & including fartlek sessions

The goal here is to strengthen your body with an increase in fatigue, increase your speed limit level

My Third block:

Run often, Fartlek sessions and long inclined sessions

The goal here is to hit your maximum speed limit level and balance it with long inclined sessions to get your body used to race condition.
